DLSU score first win against Defending Champs FEU

The De La Salle Green Archers are the heavy favorites in winning the UAAP title this season. For the reigning champions FEU however, pressure will factor their chances of retaining their crown. First order of business for the Tamaraws: rack up W's and stay on top of the mountain. Of course, Archers may have a bunch of rookies in their roster but they still have Jeron Teng.

On Wednesday, DLSU and FEU clashed for that all important first victory of the season to join the Adamson, Ateneo and NU in the winners circle. This game marked the UAAP debut of Champion Coach Aldin Ayo for the Green Archers -- who guided the Letran Knights to their 9th NCAA title last year -- De La Salle Zobel standout Aljun Melecio and Cameroonian Center Ben Mbala.

Jeron Teng wasted no time and went to work scoring buckets for the DLSU. Like last season, he was a marked man for FEU's defensive specialist Ron Dennison. Despite Dennison being a pest on D, the King Archer still managed to drop 28 points on the Tamaraws.

Ben Mbala made a huge impact in his first game for the Archers with a Double-double performance (13 points and 23 rebounds). He literally dominated the glass and out-rebounded his FEU counterpart Prince Orizu who only had 10 boards along with his 10 points.

Rookie Aljun Melecio also made good with his debut as he finished with 10 points for La Salle.

DLSU's defense, rebounding made big a difference against FEU as they went all the way to get W, 83 - 78.

FEU's Ron Dennison chalked up 13 points, 4 rebounds 2 steals and an assist while Allen Trinidad added 12 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.

DLSU will face University of the Philippines on Saturday, September 10. Reigning Champs FEU will go up against Adamson on September 11, Sunday.
