APCC Manila 2015 Round-up

Manila hosted the first ever Asia Pop Comic Con last September. The inaugural Pop Culture event featured guests from Hollywood Celebrities such as Paul Bettany (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones, Furious 7), Colton Haynes (Teen Wolf) and Jeremy Shada (voice actor of Finn the Human from the Cartoon Series: Adventure Time).

The Doctor is in

It’s not every day you see a Doctor that draws comic strips on the side.  We all know that they are usually at hospitals or clinics taking care of patients and stuff like that. Not Dr. Carlo Jose San Juan MD though. A certified Physician, he’d rather captivate you with his skills as an artist than writing medical prescriptions that only doctors can read.

Drawing comic strips is entirely a different medium as opposed to comic books like Spider-Man and Batman. In retrospect, those titles mentioned started off in comic strip form before it changed into a comic book format as we know it today. Producing a single comic strip daily is never an easy task.  For Callous Comics creator Dr. San Juan, it was much easier to produce new material for daily comic strips if the subject is pretty much about your life.
Perhaps being a Physician with an artistic side is actually cool though.

Unstoppable

From creating indie published comics to drawing International comics, there’s no stopping artist Heubert Khan Michael in showcasing his talent for a long time.

What started out as a simple hobby became more than just doodling while killing some time. For most artists, confidence grows once you get a feel of your work getting better, strokes more loose and art style evolving. Then the thought of drawing comics for a living lingers but there’s one problem, people close to you aren’t buying that idea.
For Heubert Khan Michael however, he went through that certain phase when waiting for the right time pursue his dreams was benefitial rather than jump the gun and risk failing miserably. It was pretty much the right move for him.

A Vision of Awesomeness

In Mid-September, the Philippines experienced its first ever high profile event dedicated to Pop Culture Fandom known as Asia Pop Comic Convention Manila 2015. The list of guests for the show featured International Comic Artists, Famous Cosplayers, Internet Icons and a few Hollywood Celebrities. But one name simply stood out from the rest of them: Paul Bettany.

Ignited Passion

The popularity of Indie Comics has grown since the mid-2000. For Artists Wan Malinao Mananita and Aaron Felizmenio, they plan on continuing the trend for years to come.

Comic Conventions are not only place to meet some of the best local and international artists but it’s also a haven of sorts for Indie Comics Publishers. On side, there’s a table for artists like Carlo Pagulayan, Stephen Segovia, Manix Abrera, Leinil Yu, just to name a few. On the other, a bunch of tables with pocketbook sized black and white comics (sometimes colored) on display. Diverse styles of artworks are featured for each table selling self-published works, from Western Superhero style to Manga/Anime style being sold to patrons in attendance.
